On Saturday May 1st between 1 and 3pm in Folklife Village on Gabriola Pat Maloney, Kerry Sorrenti and myself, will be shaking our can for money! Well the PHC (people for a healthy community) garbage can to be exact:) This is part of the Shake Your Can Drive put on by the Gabriola Arts Council on Saturday to help raise money for many of the Charity/Non-Profit organizations on Gabriola. Swing through the village on Saturday and toss your spare change into a good cause of your choice!

We took the girls to Victoria for the weekend which unfortunately meant we missed all the Gabriola festivities this weekend but I think we would miss something great here no matter when we went! We stayed at a downtown hotel which made it so easy to get around on foot with the kids. On Saturday morning we took the girls to the Imax at the Royal British Columbia Museum and watched “Under the Sea” on the huge screen. Aylan loved the movie, asking so many questions while her sister fell asleep in my lap:) After the movie we explored the museum for about an hour which was as long as the girls had the attention for. Once we finished we walked around Victoria and had lunch at a great fish and chips stand called “Red Fish Blue Fish” which is close to the sea plane terminal in downtown Victoria. We spent time wandering through Beacon Hill park which is so beautiful in the spring and watched as the girls and our dog Dexter ran around, great way to tire everybody out. It was a wonderful weekend but so nice to come home to our home, city lots seem so small when you come from an acreage on Gabriola.

We had a wonderful and sunny Earth Day here on Gabriola and we celebrated in one of the best places possible, our fantastic Descanso Bay Regional Park! Both of my daughters and my niece attend the same preschool and today’s class was held at the park with a fabulous talk about the intertidal zone, forest zones and the plants and animals that exist within all. The kids were also taught not to litter, to put all critters back where they found them and not to bring home things in their pockets:) This wonderful walk was followed by much deserved snacks, hot chocolate and stories. The kids were exceptional and had a really nice time. A big thanks to everybody involved in organizing this day, we are so lucky to live in such a special community!

I am a board member at People for a Healthy Community (PHC) and we have entered an artistic garbage can, designed by Gabriola’s very own Jeff Molloy, in the Art Councils “Shake your Can” event. Done with the encaustic method and utilizing Jeff’s common crow theme this is a fabulous one of a kind piece of art. Drop by Artworks for the Trashformation opening on April 22 at 7 pm to see our can and if you like it – please toss in your change (or large unmarked bills) as a donation to PHC. If you really like it, come to the Mother’s Day brunch and auction at the Surf Lodge on May 9 and buy the can, with proceeds from the can and auction of said can going to PHC! It will be a fantastic fundraiser for many groups on Gabriola and imagine how great they will look in your yard:)

Earth Day is coming up on April 22, this Thursday! To help celebrate my daughter’s preschool class is going to Descanso Bay Regional Park. Once there they will be lead by Natalie Godin in a nature walk and beach/foreshore exploration. Descanso Bay Park is also home to Gabriola’s fantastic campground which we use in the summer when we only have a short time to get away. The beach is sandstone and small pebble and there is both a lovely meadow and much forested area so it will be perfect for a guided walk for the preschoolers. The kids are very excited about both the field trip and Earth Day! My oldest says it is a time when we are reminded to take care of the Earth by turn off the water and lights when not using, make less garbage and eat good food:) Kids are so smart!
