13th Annual Gabriola Home & Garden Tour

Monday, June 27th, 2011

It was a lovely day and there was a very good turn out at the Home and Garden Tour which is a fund raiser for PHC (People for a Healthy Community). We were able to view most of the 11 fabulous homes and gardens that were on display in the four hours that we had committed to.  The gardens ranged from compact displays surrounding patios and walkways to rolling acreage with hidden paths and quiet glens ringed in a riot of color. There were a multitude of fragrant roses and many flowers and shrubs that I have not seen before, very impressive! And the homes were truly inspiring. It was a wonderful way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Helping Hands

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

On June 9th Robert of Robert’s Place will be donating food and time to cook up a lunch as a fundraiser for People for a Healthy Community!  The cost of lunch will be by donation and all the funds raised will be donated to PHC.  PHC recently got word that the Gaming Commission grant money they have come to depend on will be 4 1/2  months later than expected.  The above is one of the fundraisers that will be going on over the next few months to help carry them through until the next available money is released.  Please come and enjoy a lunch knowing that the money will be going to a good cause, helping to feed people in our community through the Food Bank and Soup Socials.

Shake Your Can…Literally!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

On Saturday May 1st between 1 and 3pm in Folklife Village on Gabriola Pat Maloney, Kerry Sorrenti and myself, will be shaking our can for money!  Well the PHC (people for a healthy community) garbage can to be exact:)  This is part of the Shake Your Can Drive put on by the Gabriola Arts Council on Saturday to help raise money for many of the Charity/Non-Profit organizations on Gabriola.  Swing through the village on Saturday and toss your spare change into a good cause of your choice!

Shake Your Can!

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I am a board member at People for a Healthy Community (PHC) and we have entered an artistic garbage can, designed by Gabriola’s very own Jeff Molloy, in the Art Councils “Shake your Can” event.  Done with the encaustic method and utilizing Jeff’s common crow theme this is a fabulous one of a kind piece of art. Drop by Artworks for the Trashformation opening on April 22 at 7 pm to see our can and if you like it – please toss in your change (or large unmarked bills) as a donation to PHC.  If you really like it, come to the Mother’s Day brunch and auction at the  Surf Lodge on May 9 and buy the can, with proceeds from the can and auction of said can going to PHC!  It will be a fantastic fundraiser for many groups on Gabriola and imagine how great they will look in your yard:)

A Sunny Sunday

Monday, June 29th, 2009

It was a beautiful and sunny Sunday and what better way to spend it than wandering through other peoples gardens and homes, getting ideas and admiring their efforts. Yesterday was the 11th annual ‘Gabriola Home and Garden Tour’ which is a fund raiser for ‘People for a Healthy Community on Gabriola’. Hundreds of tickets were sold and as usual it was a great success with two homes and nine gardens on display.

We Rode to Conquer Cancer!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

What an amazing event to be a part of! The Conquer Cancer ride from Vancouver to Seattle was a life changing experience. The ride consisted of 1701 riders whose combined efforts raised $6.9 million for the BC Cancer Society. Waking up at 5 am on Saturday morning we prepared to leave from Guilford Center at 7:30. The ride meandered through White Rock and across the USA/ Canada border. We continued through Washington state stopping at the many pit stops that were arranged for us along the way. Lunch was provided by the amazing and supportive volunteers in a beautiful park in Lake Stevens. Continuing along to Mount Vernon, 132 km from the start, where the busy crew of volunteers had set up a tent city for the over 1700 riders and many more crew. A wonderful dinner was provided and many stories of survival and loss from cancer were shared. After a good but short night sleep we prepared to depart from Mount Vernon at 7:30 am. Day two was incredible winding through Washington State up to Lake Samish and towards our final destination, Seattle. We continued along Lake Washington to the University and the finish line. We accomplished over 260 km in 2 days and I can’t wait to do it again. See you next year in Seattle! If you are interested in doing this ride or joining the volunteer crew visit www.conquercancer.ca for more information, or talk to me, I am organizing a Gabriola team for 2010.
