Groundhog’s Day

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

February 2nd is an exciting day in our house as the girls race around waiting to hear if we are set for an early spring. This year the results seem to be mixed with the Canadian groundhog’s calling for an early spring and the American claiming 6 more weeks of winter. I took a look at the forecast for the next 5 days and it appears that we may be having an early spring! Sun and mild temperatures are in the forecast and the blue sky tonight as the sun was going down is a testament to that forecast.

Garden Raiding in January

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

We just had a cold snap on Gabriola Island with a good dump of snow, heavy wind and rain, and today sun with seasonable temperatures! I decided to see what greens and herbs survived the nasty weather of the past 10 days and was pleasantly surprised to find beets, kale, parsley, rosemary, chard, kale, cabbage and a rather small cauliflower. It is the best feeling when you can wander out into the patch of semi-frozen soil and find in amongst the winter weeds a good cache of nutritious and fresh veggies. It is a great reminder that spring is just around the corner and that I really need to get on placing my seed orders sooner than later.
And with all that I found in the garden we are having lentil soup chock full of all the greens I harvested this evening with warm cornbread, perfect for a west coast winters night!

Eagles and Seals

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

It was a gray day at Orlebar Point on Gabriola Island but there was excitement in the air. Seals were cavorting in the sea and eagles kept watch on shore. Perhaps there was a school of fish that had their attention, but they certainly had ours!

Inquiry Fair

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Last night was the first ever Inquiry Fair at  Gabriola Elementary School. The Kindergarten class focused on posters that outlined ways they as 5 and 6 year old kids could help the Earth.  The children did a wonderful job focusing on what they felt would be good for the Earth, some ideas were planting a garden, eating local food, picking up garbage, hanging clothes to dry, and catching the school bus.  It was wonderful to see such bright posters full of beautiful ideas, well done to all the kids!

Gabriola Hummers

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

We recently purchased the best hummingbird feeder ever. It doesn’t leak, it holds plenty of solution, there is a moat to stop the ants and the perching rail is fully utilized by the birds and makes them easy to watch. We have two kinds that visit our feeder, Anna’s Hummingbird and Rufous Hummingbird. Both are beautiful but I find the adult male Rufous to be most spectacular with his burnished copper colored body and bright red throat. We haven’t fully figured out if this is a female Rufous or an Anna’s Hummingbird in the photo but we are enchanted just the same.

Mothers Day

Monday, May 9th, 2011

With three mothers in the family it is no wonder that we celebrate Mothers Day. The weather co operated marvelously with afternoon sunshine and the warmth that we so appreciate. We set up table and chairs and a blanket in the garden and all the family met for tea and fresh rhubarb crumble, custard, luscious brownies and incredible meringue cookies. The children and dogs ran and played and fun was had by all. Being the oldest mother I even got a present – a pretty summer dress from the local dress shop.

A Stone Man

A walk in the 707 park yesterday brought me to this very attractive man sitting on a large moss covered stone!

More on Seaweed

Monday, April 18th, 2011

One of our readers sent us this information from Dianne Sanford, coordinator for the Sunshine Coast forage fish sampling project, under guidance of Ramona DeGraaf, MSc., and eelgrass mapper with the Seachange Marine Conservation Society.

Herring eggs are present on seaweed washed up on shore (not just on seaweed growing in the water) during herring spawning season, starting mid February to the end of March on the Sunshine Coast. Due to human impact on herring stocks and the effect of that decline on the food chain, gardeners should refrain from collecting seaweed during this period.

Sparks on Gabriola!

Friday, March 18th, 2011

This past fall we were very lucky to have the chance to enroll our eldest daughter into “Sparks” which is the first level of the Girl Guides of Canada program.  They have been meeting weekly since this time and the activities have been wonderful from going to tour the Police Station, Fire Station, have a campfire at Descanso Campground and the much anticipated Sleepover!  The girls all got together at 7 pm to do crafts, sing songs, and watch a short movie in a safe and very enjoyable atmosphere.  For information on the Gabriola chapter of Sparks/Brownies/Girl Guides email Donna Hamilton at donnaandbill@shaw.ca
