Thursday, February 4th - Seed exchange and Mason Bee presentation courtesy of Gabriola Garden Club. 7pm at the Agi Hall, all welcome.

Saturday, February 6th - "Travels on the Silk Road" Slide show presented by Steve Struthers, Alison Douglas and Pam Asquith. 3:30 pm at the Roxy, free admission.


Sunday, February 7th - Candlemas Celebration, One of the 8 seasonal celebrations, the first after Winter Solstice. 3 pm at Rose Crystal Studio, potluck to follow, all welcome. Call 250-247-9964 for more information.

Sunday, February 14th - 2pm at The Island Book Shoppe – Love Poems & Chocolate – an alternative to Hallmark! Come and share a love poem or two and some chocolate! The poems can be ones that you wrote or your favourites by another author but they should celebrate – in some way- LOVE in one of its many manifestations: romantic love, love of the natural world, love of one’s children, love of – you name it! Don’t want to read a poem? Then come and be the audience – we need you too. No fee (except poetry and chocolate) but space is limited, so reservations are required. RSVP to Sharon at 250-247-8946

Thursday February 18th - Vanishing Beacons: BC’s Lightkeepers. 7pm at the Roxy Theatre. Please join maritime historian Ivan Bulic and Entrance Island lightkeepers for a presentation about the lore and romance of BC’s lighthouses and the men and women who keep the beacons lit.

Friday, February 19th - Poetry Gabriola presents Red Chamber, the second performance in the Words and Music 2010 series. In the Phoenix Auditorium at the Haven, 7pm, 240 Davis Rd. Tickets $20, available at Artworks or online at www.poetrygabriola.com.

Saturday, February 20th -Food Forum 2010 at the Gabriola Community Hall from 12 - 4pm. Display tables available at no charge. RSVP to Eric Veale at 250-247-9567.

Saturday, February 20th - The Gabriola Dance School will be having a full scale production at 2 pm at the Haven, dancers range in age from 2 to 16 years. Admission is by donation to PHC food bank. Call Mara Brenner at 250-247-8538 for more info.

Saturday, February 27th - A reading by award winning short story writer Carol Windley at The Roxy at 2 pm. Free Admission.

Saturday, February 27th - Trades and Services Fair from 11am to 2pm at the Commons--A Chamber of Commerce and Gabriola Commons sponsored event. If you work at a trade on Gabriola, this is for you. What will it cost you? Two hours of your time donated, to be silent auctioned as a fund raiser for The Commons. What you get: A table at The Commons to display/advertise what you do and to talk to potential customers, as they come in to bid on the cornucopia of donated trade hours and to learn about what trades have to offer on Gabriola. Friday, January 1st - Gabriola Co-op Radio CKGI presents “Cover The World With Goodness” live at The Haven. A fundraiser for our new community radio station. Doors, 6pm; show, 7-9pm. All ages. Tickets $15 or $25 for both Haven and Surf Lodge show, available at Artworks & Falconer Books Nanaimo.

Friday, January 1st - Gabriola Co-op Radio CKGI presents “Under the Covers”, adult variety show at The Surf. Admission restricted to 19 years or older. Content may not be suitable for all audiences, please use listener discretion. Doors: 9pm. Show: 10pm to midnight. Tickets $15 or with the Haven show $25.

Saturday, January 9th -Day long kickoff of “2010–Year of the Clinic” celebration for islanders of all ages. Put on by the Gabriola Health Care Auxiliary at the Community Hall.

Saturday, January 9th - Poetry Gabriola presents Veda Hille and Her Band: “Do You Want What I Have Got?” This is the first of four performances in the “Words & Music” concert series. In acknowledgment of the tough times we are weathering, Poetry Gabriola is offering each of these concerts for the low ticket price of $20. Saturday, Jan. 16th and Sunday, Jan. 17th - Antony Holland in “Tuesdays with Morrie” returns to Western Edge for two shows only. All tickets: $18 before Jan. 1st, $22 starting Jan. 1st. Tickets are available by phone at 250-325-7777 (Nanaimo) or 1-888-320-3343, and at Falconer Books (Port Place Mall) and Gabriola Artworks.

Thursday, January 21st - at The Roxy, The Haints with The Fiddlesniffers. The Haints play old-time stringband music. These are four world-class musicians in this traditional style (Pharis Romero, Jason Romero, Erynn Marshall and Carl Jones). The Fiddlesniffers (Victor Anthony and Alison Humphries) play “hillbilly chamber music” which is traditional fiddle tunes arranged for two acoustic guitars, one fingerpicked and the other flatpicked.

Saturday, January 30th - at The Roxy, Sarah Tradewell with special guest Victor Anthony. Sarah is a dazzling young fiddler from Victoria. She plays traditional Irish tunes (and whatever else strikes her fancy) with a few vocal numbers in the mix as well. Victor will play a short set of trad material to open the show. www.sarahtradewell.com.

Thursday, Dec. 3 - 101 Solutions for Global Warming. Author Guy Dauncey launching his latest book, The Climate Challenge at The Roxy Theatre on December 3rd at 7pm. Admission by donation, sponsored by New Society Publishers.

Saturday, Dec. 5 - The Canadian Tenors in concert with the Vancouver Island Symphony on Saturday December 5 at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 6, at 2pm at The Port Theatre. Sat., Dec. 5 - Victor Anthony and Friends third annual Concert For The Commons at The Roxy. Tickets will be available at Artworks. Doors open at 7pm, downbeat at 7:30pm.

Wed., Dec. 9 - Taking the Lines of Sea Star 2: A 1934 Matsumoto Troller at 7pm, Silva Bay Shipyard School. Gabriola boatbuilder Tony Grove talks about “Taking the Lines of Sea Star 2: A 1934 Matsumoto Troller”.

Fri., Dec. 11 – October Ferries to Gabriola: A Reading at the Roxy. In 1946 Malcolm and Margerie Lowry caught the Atrevida for Gabriola. Now a modern couple follow in their wake, echoing their search for paradise. Join them at a reading of Charlotte Cameron’s new play. Tickets at Artworks. 7:30pm. Doors open at 7pm.

Fri., Dec. 11 - Jupiter Ranch Art Studio invites you and your well-behaved pets to a festive night of art, baubles and fun. Friday, December 11th, 5pm – 9pm. The art of emerging Pet Portrait Artist, Lesley Harris, will be featured and you’ll be sure to recognize a furry Gabriola face in her work. Sat., Dec. 12 - Restoring Carlotta, 1899 Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter at 4pm, Silva Bay Shipyard School. Stephen Mohan talks about restoring Carlotta, built in 1899 as a Bristol Channel pilot cutter, and worked for the Cumberland Sea Fisheries before being converted into a yacht in 1907.

Sunday, December 13 & Thursday, December 17 - Radio After Dark presents Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer at the Surf Lodge. Evening performances at 7:30 with Sunday matinee at 2:00. Tickets at Artworks in Folklife Village.

Sun., Dec. 27 (24 hours)- Christmas Bird Count 2009. If you can help, no experience is required as you will go with someone who knows the birds. A $5 donation from each person goes to Bird Studies Canada to help cross-Canada analysis. Please call Margaret at 250-247-2025 as soon as possible.

November 21 - Mel Watson at The Roxy. Indie artisit Mel Watson offers her unique musical style with the aid of modern technology and outstanding musical ability. November 25 - Clothes swap party at the Surf Lodge. Contact Sarah Welsby for more inofrmation or to donate clothes. Cost to attend is $15 per individual and $20 per family with proceeds going to build an orphanage in Cambodia. Starts at 4 pm!
