Sat., Mar. 19 – The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra performs Pearls of the Classics at the Haven featuring classical guitarist, Oscar Clemotte, in a concert of engaging and beautiful music for strings. The program includes works by Vivaldi, Webern, Massenet,Scarlatti and Suk. Advance tickets are available at Fascinating Rhythm on Commercial St. and The Quilted Duck Gift Cottage on Rutherford Rd. Performance begins at 2 p.m. Tickets at the door. Admission is $20 adults, $10 students, children under 12 free.

Saturdays – Teen Movie Night at the Gathering Place from 7 p.m. to Midnight.

Saturdays: There will be work bees at the Commons for the rest of this month on Saturdays. Soup will be provided. Work will be on erecting the new greenhouse. If you have some time and want to work with other Commoners come on out and lend a hand and when your done take a spoon in that hand and have some soup.

Sat., Jan. 22 – The Gabriola Historical and Museum Society will be hosting an Open House and Information Meeting at the WI Hall from 12 to 4. The board will be there and available to address questions and inquiries from members of the public. Those wishing to will have an opportunity to sign a petition supporting the Museum’s request for operational and maintenance funding through the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Sat., Jan. 22 – Robbie Burns Night at the Gabriola Golf Club. A fundraiser for the Anne Reid Highland Dancers who are preparing to qualify/go to the Canadian Highland Dance Competition in Antigonish N.S. Tickets $30 at Artworks and from Alexa Emerson. 247-7250. Doors open at 5 p.m.

October 31st – after dark at the Twin Beaches, Halloween Fireworks over Taylor Bay is organized by the Gabriola Fire Department. This special event has been taking place for over 30 years and is always a fantastic display!

July 2,9, 16, 23 and 30- Summer Studio Tour, a self guided tour of several select studios will give you a taste of what is to come on Thanksgiving weekend at the 14th annual Gabriola Studio Tour, featuring 50 artists in 41 studios. July 5-9 – Kids Club “Heart of Africa”  for ages 3 through grade 7, 9 am – 11:30 am at the Gabriola Fellowship Church, call Chris 250-247-7971

July 10 – Once Upon a Time Art Extravaganza, an art in the garden event featuring 10 local artists – free family fun – 10 am to 4 pm, 539 Wildwood Cres.

Every Saturday – Gabriola Farmers Market at the Agricultural Hall, 10 am to noon, until October

June 4 – Gabriola Emergency Social Services Team hosts a free workshop at The Rollo Center across from the school at 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, how you can help yourselves and the community in the event of a major disaster and what help you can expect from the Regional District and the Province.

June 6 – Jake’s Gift, 2 pm and 7 pm performances at the Gabriola Theatre Centre. This award winning Canadian play www.juliamackey.com is a fundraiser for the theatre, we have seen it and highly recommend it but take tissues, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Tickets $20 at Artworks and The Island Book Shoppe.

June 7 - June 11, Gabriola Radio Society (GRS) will be hosting the National Campus Community Radio Conference (NCRC) at Camp Miriam. This premium conference, taking place in a beautiful rural island setting, will be open to all NCRA members as well as anyone interested in expanding their radio skills and knowledge. June 13, Heartsong Choir & Naomi Wakan, 7:30 pm – Benefit Concert for Kidzpositive, a program for HIV/AIDS positive kids, their mothers and grandmothers in Capetown South Africa. The accapella harmonies of Heartsong Choir and poetry of Naomi Wakan mixed deliciously and presented for your enjoyment at the Gabriola Theatre Centre.

June 14, Rodrigo Pessoa Golf Classic – fund raiser for the medical clinic, at the Gabriola Golf and Country Club. Two sporting worlds will collide when show jumping’s World and Olympic Champion, Rodrigo Pessoa, comes to Gabriola, accepting an invitation to bring his name to a future signature golf tournament: the “Rodrigo Pessoa Golf Classic”.

June 19, 11am to 4pm, and on June 20, 11am to 2pm – Friends of the Library, Giant Book Sale, Rollo Centre, North Road, a huge variety of books at bargain prices will be sold as a fundraiser for library events. June 19 – June 20, Silva Bay Fishing Derby, prize for largest Chinook Salmon is $1,000 and there will be 30 other prizes awarded. $1,000 will be donated to the Nanaimo River Hatchery from the proceeds. Tickets are $25 per rod, and can be obtained at Silva Bay Marina, Pages, Village Paint and Hardware, or the Harbour Chandler. June 24, Himalayan Festival, 6:00 pm at the Community Hall, entrance by donation. This is a fund raiser for eye care in the remote hills of Nepal. 6 pm Nepali meal $10, 7:30 slide show and films (by donation).

June 27, 10 am -5 pm the Gabriola Home and Garden Tour, a self-guided tour of beautiful homes and gardens, sponsored by People for a Healthy Community. Tickets: $20 Available at Lockwood Gardens, Wildrose Garden Centre, Wheelbarrow Nursery and Artworks.

Regular events and programs are held at the many venues throughout Gabriola Island including The Roxy, Raspberries Jazz Cafe, The Phoenix Auditorium, Skol Pub, Silva Bay, the Gabriola Museum, the Public Library, The Commons, the Hope Center (for kids) and the Rollo Center (for seniors)

The newly formed Gabriolan Vegetarian Group is having a panel presentation and discussion at the Roxy, on Monday May 10th from 7 to 9 pm. Admission is free although small donations for organizational expenses are welcome.

Doris’s Fund Run Day at the Gym@Twin Beaches. 7:00 am – 7:00 pm. Pledge sheets can be picked up at the gym or by phoning Doris 250-247-9747. If you do not want to ‘sweat’ it you are encouraged to drop in, have a muffin and drop your donation in the giant jar! Feel the energy, join the fun! All proceeds go to the Gabriola Health Care Foundation.

May 13

Lulu Performing Arts Society is looking for items for the “Display and Sale” taking place on Thursday, May 13th at the Community Hall before and after the Gabriola premier performance of “Stitch”, an a capella opera performed by three women and three sewing machines. The display and sale will feature everything from machine-sewn fabric art and quilts, to “home-made” clothing, vintage garments, and aprons. Machine-sewn assemblage a la GIRO and vintage sewing tools and memorabilia are welcome!

The second annual Gabriola’s Got Talent – Junior Edition. On Saturday, May 15th., The Gathering Place together with the PHIT (Peer Helpers In Training) team of 2010, will be hosting a special talent contest in the multi-purpose room at the Gathering Place Youth Centre, at 790 North Road. So if you know of a young person who is gifted in song or dance, tappin’ and a-struttin’, juggling or yodeling, magic or comedy, and more, tell them to come and join in. Contestant Entry Forms can be picked up at The Gathering Place or the Gabriola Elementary School. All entries must be submitted to the Gathering Place by Saturday, May 8th, together with an entry fee of $2 per contestant. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in two age categories: 9 and under, and 10 to 13 years.

Cowboys for the Clinic – This Pancake Breakfast & Country Hoedown will prove to be the biggest and best public awareness event of the year! With music to chomp too, and cowboy boots to stomp to, the WI plant sale and the opening of the Farmer’s Market all nearby, 9-noon at the new clinic site.

Thursday, April 8 – Friends of the Library host an illustrated presentation and workshop by Valerie Alia, award-winning scholar, journalist and photographer. Free admission to The Roxy 7pm – 9pm.

Saturday, April 10 – Kathy Mac and The Bevy of Boys. The Bevy will fill The Skol with R&B, blues, soul and energy to keep you dancing. Cover is $5 and the show starts at 9:30pm.
